{"id":807,"date":"2011-08-27T17:33:51","date_gmt":"2011-08-28T00:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aiaaocrocketry.org\/?page_id=807"},"modified":"2011-12-03T08:07:18","modified_gmt":"2011-12-03T15:07:18","slug":"to-saturn","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aiaaocrocketry.org\/?page_id=807","title":{"rendered":"To: Saturn"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>There have been many missions to Saturn.\u00a0 The latest was Cassini,\u00a0launched\u00a0 October 15, 1997.\u00a0 The first was Pioneer 11, launched in 1972.\u00a0 Further details about the Saturn missions can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/planetary\/planets\/saturnpage.html\" target=\"_blank\">NASA&#8217;s Saturn web pages<\/a>.\u00a0 Saturn is the second largest planet (compared to Jupiter), with a radius of about 9.5 times that of earth at eh equator and is at a minimum distance of 1.2 billion km (746 million miles).\u00a0 More details about Saturn can be found on NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/planetary\/factsheet\/saturnfact.html\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn Fact Sheet<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>[videogallery id=&#8221;Saturn-Cassini&#8221;]<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>With the videos below, you will go back to September 1, 1979 as Pioneer 11 reached Saturn.\u00a0 In these earlier days of the space program, television abandoned its regularly scheduled programs to cover major space events for hours at a time &#8211; live.\u00a0 Viewers and engineers and scientists alike\u00a0were experiencing these discoveries for the first time ever!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>[videogallery id=&#8221;Saturn-Missions&#8221;]<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/cassini\/main\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cassini<\/a> &#8211; 1997\u00a0 Cassini\u00a0is a current\u00a0a mission to Saturn via Jupiter (<a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=1997-061A\" target=\"_blank\">detailed description<\/a>).\u00a0 One of Cassini&#8217;s tasks was to deliver the Huygens probe from the ESA\u00a0(European Space Agency) to\u00a0Saturn&#8217;s moon Titan.\u00a0 Then Cassini will remain in orbit around Saturn for years to come gathering data about the Saturian system including Saturn&#8217;s moons.\u00a0 More information can also be found\u00a0on the <a href=\"http:\/\/saturn.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">JPL Cassini web pages<\/a>.\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciclops.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">CICLOPS<\/a> page includes some of the imagery from Cassini.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/sci.esa.int\/science-e\/www\/area\/index.cfm?fareaid=12\" target=\"_blank\">Huygens<\/a> &#8211; 1997 Huygens was a mission with Cassini specifically to explore one of Saturn&#8217;s moons &#8211; Titan (<a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=1997-061C\" target=\"_blank\">detailed description<\/a>).\u00a0 Huygens was built by the European Space Agency and\u00a0rode along with the Cassini orbiter.\u00a0 During July 2004 Cassini-Huygens entered the Saturnian System.\u00a0 Near the end of the third orbit around Saturn, Cassini jettisoned Huygens to begin a 20 day journey to Saturn&#8217;s moon Titan.\u00a0 On January 14, 2005 the Huygen&#8217;s proben entered Titan&#8217;s upper atmosphere and descended for about 2 hours 27 minutes via parachute to the surface.\u00a0 It then spent 1 hour and 10 minutes on the surface collecting additional data.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/voyager.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Voyager<\/a> 2 &#8211; 1977 Voyager 2 launched 8\/20\/1977 and was the first of a pair of spacecraft launche to explore Jupiter and Saturn\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/nmc\/spacecraftDisplay.do?id=1977-076A\" target=\"_blank\">detailed description<\/a>)\u00a0\u00a0but was plagued with problems &#8211; later overcome.\u00a0 Its launch date was unique in that Voyager 2&#8217;s\u00a0path would also take it past Uranus and Neptune.\u00a0 Like Voyager 1, it contained a\u00a0golden record of sounds from earth.\u00a0\u00a0Voyager continues to speed out of our solar system.
